Purpose in Motion
Mahama Refugee Camp | July 24, 2025
“When someone becomes better for themselves, they naturally become better for others.”
Momentum in Every Step
From the moment the day began, there was a sense of momentum in the air. Conversations unfolded, ideas came alive, and every session moved forward with focus, creativity, and a spirit of shared learning. Scholars arrived ready, not just for lessons, but for the kind of growth that goes beyond the classroom.
Class discussions began with guided reading on gender equality and equity, unfolding in powerful small-group seminars. Through hard questions and honest reflections, students confronted the challenges of inequality and imagined futures of fairness and inclusion.
It wasn’t just a reading exercise, it was a space for voices to rise, for ideas to grow, and for young people to see themselves as part of the solution.
From Language to Leadership
While one class tackled gender, another dove into Language Lab, a session rooted not just in words, but in presence and power. Students practiced the art of speaking to inspire. Not just for tests, but for change.
Between learning, there were playful breaks filled with joy, movement, and laughter. These moments reminded us: healing and hope don’t come from books alone, they live in community.
Rethinking Foreign Aid: Rethinking Africa
Later, discussions turned toward foreign aid and Africa’s future. Students didn’t hold back. They explored how dependency forms, why corruption persists, and what alternatives could lead to true self-reliance.
One student asked, “Why does it feel like Africa is always catching up, instead of setting the pace?”
These weren’t complaints. They were visions. The class became a conversation about entrepreneurship, remittances, and the real power of young Africans to reshape the global narrative.
We didn’t just teach, we learned. And in those classrooms, the future of policy, economics, and equity sat upright and spoke with purpose.
Curious Minds, Full of Questions
At day’s end, students lingered. Not because they had to, but because they wanted to.
"Where did you study after here?"
"Can this bootcamp continue?"
"Will you come back to teach us again?"
Their hunger for learning became our greatest reward. The day may have ended, but curiosity stayed behind. So we opened office hours. Because questions deserve time. And passion deserves space.
Behind the Scenes
Even after students headed home, the #L4R team stayed, reflecting, reviewing, and preparing. The final day of the bootcamp was near, and it had to echo all the heart that had gone into the week so far.
Because if Day 4 taught us anything, it’s this: when circumstances shift, let purpose lead. And when youth are empowered, there’s no locked door that can hold them back.
With deep gratitude to GovernmentofRwanda,
UNHCRRwanda, and the leadership and staff of
G.S Paysannat L School
for making this possible.
And to the young scholars: you are the reason we do this work.
