Refugee students graduating from high school in Rwanda often show strong academic potential. However, a major barrier stands between them and higher education: English proficiency. Due to disrupted education and limited resources in refugee settings, many students face challenges in mastering English — a critical skill for success in college and beyond.

Refugee students graduating from high school in Rwanda often show strong academic potential. However, a major barrier stands between them and higher education: English proficiency. Due to disrupted education and limited resources in refugee settings, many students face challenges in mastering English — a critical skill for success in college and beyond.
This language gap, combined with a shortage of scholarship opportunities, creates a sobering reality. According to UNHCR, while 70% of refugee youth complete secondary school, only 4% go on to access tertiary education.

At Light4Refugee, our Academic Preparation Department offers a rigorous English immersion program designed to close this gap. Through intensive language training, ongoing support, and academic challenges tailored to students' growth, we equip refugee youth with the tools they need to succeed in higher education — and to compete both locally and globally for life-changing opportunities.

For refugees in Rwanda, protracted displacement is the norm. Camps like Kiziba have existed since 1996, and continue to receive new arrivals. With hopes of return diminishing, education becomes the most reliable path to a dignified, self-reliant future.

Yet the statistics paint a stark picture: from the 70% of refugee youth who complete high school, only 4% access higher education. Financial hardship, limited support systems, and unfamiliarity with the college application process all stand in the way.

Light4Refugee’s College Counseling Department is dedicated to opening doors. We raise awareness of scholarship opportunities and guide high-achieving refugee students through the complex college admissions process. This includes:

- Coaching on writing compelling college essays
- Assistance with application forms
- Supporting recommendation letter requests
- Navigating deadlines, interviews, and scholarship portals

💼 Career Guidance

While many refugee university students in Rwanda display incredible resilience and talent, a gap still exists: a lack of professional readiness. Graduates often face uncertainty about their career paths, limited guidance, and few resources to help them break into the workforce. The challenge is compounded by high unemployment.

While many refugee university students in Rwanda display incredible resilience and talent, a gap still exists: a lack of professional readiness. Graduates often face uncertainty about their career paths, limited guidance, and few resources to help them break into the workforce. The challenge is compounded by high unemployment.
In 2022, Rwanda’s unemployment rate stood at 24.3% (UNHCR), and opportunities are especially scarce for refugees. Many end up returning to refugee camps after graduation, unable to leverage their hard-earned degrees.
