The Launch of Light4Refugee Scholars Bootcamp

Mahama Refugee Camp | July 21, 2025

"The gates opened, classrooms unlocked, and we walked into possibility."

A Day That Changed Everything

On Monday, July 21st, something extraordinary began at G.S. Paysannat L in Mahama Refugee Camp. The very school that once nurtured so many of us—the Light4Refugee founders and team as a whole—became the launchpad for a new chapter: the first-ever Light4Refugee Scholars Bootcamp.

The halls echoed with excitement. More than 120 eager young minds showed up, nearly tripling the number we expected. With no clear structure, minimal time, and hearts pounding with nervous energy and excitement, our team adapted in real time. What unfolded was nothing short of remarkable.

A Full Day of Purpose

Our classes unfolded as life itself does: spontaneously, beautifully, and sometimes, a little chaotically.

We kicked off with sessions that sparked thought, stirred emotion, and challenged assumptions:

  • Critical Thinking
  • Leadership
  • Guided Reading
  • College Counseling
  • Career Exploration
  • Mental Health & Psychosocial Support

Facilitators showed up—some in person, others virtually. And while methods varied, the mission was clear: empower, inspire, uplift.

Students didn't just sit and listen. They leaned in. Asked hard questions. Shared personal reflections. Laughed, paused, and learned. Some moments were loud with energy; others were quietly profound.

A First Step Worth Remembering

It wasn’t the schedule we’ll remember—it was the spirit.

  • How one student stood up, nervous but bold, to share a dream.
  • How the room fell silent during a story that hit too close to home.
  • How the mentors, barely older than the learners, guided with humility and purpose.
  • How a school once filled with our own childhood memories transformed into a beacon of hope for the future.

Snacks were shared. Smiles exchanged. Notebooks filled. Possibilities awakened.

When Leadership Meets Humanity

This boot camp would not exist without the Government of Rwanda, whose open-armed refugee policy since 2015 has offered safety, dignity, and opportunity to so many. To even host such a peace program, with full respect and freedom, is a testament to the strength of Rwanda’s leadership and commitment to humanity.

We also recognize the ongoing support of the UNHCR—whose tireless efforts in refugee protection and education make the work of Light4Refugee possible. Though not directly involved in the boot camp, their foundational presence is always felt.

And then, our beloved G.S. Paysannat L—the place where many of us once wore uniforms and carried notebooks through these very halls. To this day, we were welcomed back not as students, but as mentors. The staff embraced us with warmth, offering everything from their time, their resources, and stood beside us not only in spirit, but in presence.

We didn’t just feel accommodated. We felt at home.

Only the Beginning

Day 1 taught us that impact isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence.

We showed up, together. And that’s what made it unforgettable.

The following day brought more lessons, more stories, and more light.

But for now, we pause to breathe it in and reflect.

The first step was taken. And the journey has begun.
